Masterclass “Does psychology matter? Dealing with cognition, emotion, and behavior in the interrogation and courtroom” op 7.11.2017

Over the past few decades much has been learned about the role of psychological factors in legal cases. Growing scientific evidence clearly shows that (neuro-) cognitive, emotional, and behavioural factors have a significant impact on statements and testimonies of witnesses, victims, and suspects. Hence, it is important for legal professionals to fully grasp the relevance of these psychological factors.  The aim of this Masterclass is twofold: It aims to (1) explore the specific impact of psychological factors in legal cases, and (2) to discuss ways to better account for these factors. In the first part of the Masterclass Henry Otgaar will explain why memory plays a vital role in many legal cases. In the second part Lesley Laver (UK) will focus on developmental and social factors that influence the interview of young suspects.
